DIY Baby Shower Favor – Ombre Cookies

Although I’m a little late posting these beautiful shortbread cookies as a Valentine’s Day idea, they are the perfect DIY ombre cookies baby shower favor! I think I am going to make these in blue or green ombre for my friend’s baby shower in a couple months. They turned out adorable and I loved the process of creating them.

The end result was a favor bag of five cookies varying from dark red through the pink shades to white. The only down-side to these cookies, in my opinion, is the lack of brown sugar for flavor. In order to keep the white a true white color, I only used white sugar. They are still really tasty and you could consider a pinch of sugar or sprinkles on the top.

Everything You Need for DIY Ombre Cookies as a Baby Shower Favor

I did a quick search on and found a food network recipe. Then I doubled the recipe, which resulted in the following ingredients:

  • 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cup sugar
  • 2 egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Gel-Based Dye
  • Platinum Baking Sheets, to avoid sticking

Step 1: Make the White Dough

  1. Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside
  2. Beat butter and sugar together until light in color. Add egg and milk – beat.
  3. Gradually add flour mixture on low speed
  4. Divide the dough in five parts. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight.

I chose to make the white dough on one night and refrigerate it overnight. Then the next night when I got home from work, I pull out all of the doughs to cool, dye them and set them in a consistent form.

Step 2: Color the Dough for Ombre Effect

They need a couple hours to get back to pliable texture. It should feel a little like playdough. For the pink-ish ombre effect, use varied drops of pink, red and burgundy. Burgundy should only be used in the darkest. Here’s what I did for each:

  1. White — no die
  2. Pink
  3. More Pink and Less Red
  4. Less Pink and More Red
  5. Red and Burgundy

Step 3: Roll Dough into

  1. Lay 16 inches of plastic wrap in front of you
  2. Place cookie dough mound
  3. Shape it into a log
  4. Take side closest to you, fold the plastic wrap over the dough
  5. Seal the plastic wrap over the dough, by rolling the dough forward or pulling the plastic wrap backward
  6. Use both hands to roll until the log is uniform consistency, about 2 inches in diameter.
  7. Twist ends and tie in knot
  8. Place in fridge until ready to bake.

Step 4: Bake Your Oombre Cookie Party Favors

  5. Bake 7-9 minutes.
  6. Lay out on wire racks to cool.
