After a poll on my Instagram, I found that lots of people were interested in DIY Holiday Pillows. I absolutely love adding these to our home decor! They are so easy! You can make these pillows any way you want for any season or style. I’ll start with the basic pillow cover using any kind of fabric.
This year, I realized that I’ve suppressed my creative side for too long. Why? The excuses ranged from “its too much work” or “I don’t have time” to “its easier (or cheaper) to buy.” Maybe some of those are even true, but creativity makes me so incredibly happy!
What You Need to DIY a Pillow
- Your preference of fabric (I got two yards for two 20×20 pillows)
- Sewing machine and thread (color of your choice)
- Pins to mark for sewing the hems
- Iron, warmed up to the level of your fabric
- Fabric cutting tools:
- measuring tape
- Fabric cutter
- Chalk to mark on the fabric
- Stuffing (I use the same 20×20 pillows all year long and change the pillow covers seasonally)
1) DIY Pillow – Fabric Preparation
1. [Optional] Wash the fabric (I didn’t wash until after, but before prevents any shrinking that may happen)
2. [Optional] Iron the fabric to make the cutting easier
2) Cut to Fabric to Pillow Size
3. Lay out your measuring tools
4. Measure the fabric. Use fabric chalk to mark your measurements. Basic math will be:
- WIDTH = pillow width size + 1″ for seams
- LENGTH = pillow length size x 2 sides + 6″ for the envelope slip.
- Examples include:
- 20×20 pillow becomes 21×46
- 16×16 pillow becomes 17×38
5. Use fabric chalk to mark your measurements.
6. Cut the fabric
7. Turn the fabric, pattern-side to the table.
8. Fold over a seam of 0.5″ on both short, width sides.
3) Create the Envelope Slit
9. [Optional] Iron both seams flat to help with sewing.
10. Sew both seams down to hem the side.
11. With the fabric pattern-side down, put the pillow exactly in the middle of the fabric. Then move it an inch or two up. Fold the top down and bottom over the top. This is where you create the envelope slit.
12. Align the sides.
13. Place one pin in each side, holding the overlap of the envelope together
14. Slide the pillow out.
4) Sew Pillow Together
15. Pin the sides of the fabric together. This will provide guidance for the next step.
16. Sew both sides together, removing the pins as you go.
17. Turn the pillow right-side out
18. Insert pillow through the envelope slit.
5) Enjoy Your DIY Pillow Success
