Meal Planning Madness – Week 3 of the Challenge

Meal planning is a legit skill

This is exactly why I am doing this. When things are difficult for me, I am the kind of person who sets up a strategic attack. So this challenge is my strategic attack! Here we are again on Sunday about to go grocery shopping late in the evening. Things popped up again, last-minute. Daniel worked in the kitchen as a line cook for his friend’s restaurant last night. That came out of nowhere, but was an amazing experience for him – he loves the kitchen!

Lessons Learned from 2 Weeks of Meal Planning

  1. A prep day is an absolute must. So I added a “Prep Day” section to the weekly meal plan sheet. Things like CrockPot meals are only “easy” when they are prepared in advance. Throw contents from bag in CrockPot and press start.
  2. Awareness of difficulty level is good to know in advance. When Daniel cooks from scratch without a plan, its likely going to be an extremely complicated recipe. It’s true! So when we have a plan, it’s doable.
  3. Staple recipes will save your butt. At least, they save mine. If you’ve been following, you see that many recipes have stayed on the list from week 1 to week 2 and now to week 3. I’m going to try to phase things out, as I get more comfortable with planning 21 meals a week.
  4. A cheat meal might salvage a weary cook.  This week, one would say we “failed.” I ate two meals that were not on the menu. Why? The first meal was The other was a last minute, surprise birthday party for someone we value greatly!
